The Ark
2022
Written for the 2022 São Paulo Contemporary Composers Festival. This piece for alto sax, bass clarinet, and electric guitar is a reimagining of the biblical story of Noah and the Great Flood. It was premiered on August 7th by Rafael Schmidt (bass clarinet), Douglas Braga (saxophone), and Camilo Carrara (guitar).

The piece is not multimovement, however, there are several sections that represent different parts of the tale.
The opening represents God speaking to Noah and warning him of the flood. The narrative moves to Noah trying to warn people of God’s wrath and consistenly facing rejection. The next section is representative of the animals loading onto the ark and is followed by the storm and forty day flood. The last section of the work represents the peaceful ending of the story. A rainbow was planted in the sky as God’s promise that this type of destruction would never overtake the Earth again.
